Doncaster Rovers 3-2 Richmond
Goals: Ben Vernes, Trevor Bird, Jeffrey Xu
For a shaky first 20 minutes, Rovers found it difficult to get the ball out of defence and Adam Bove in goal had to be alert to keep Richmond scoreless making two sharp saves. Then, a Rovers attack brought the first goal with
Ben Vernes shooting across the keeper into the bottom left-hand corner. Five minutes later a drive from Ian Branch was well saved by the Richmond keeper but he couldn't hold on and Trevor Bird tucked in the loose ball to give Rovers a 2-0 half-time lead.
The second half started with more of the same as Jeffrey Xu, in his first game for the club, popped up in the area to score the third from close range to give Rovers a 3-0 lead. Richmond pulled a goal back halfway through the second half but Rovers continued to press for a fourth goal. An unfortunate penalty conceded in the last minute with the ball striking a Rovers defender on the elbow gave Richmond a second goal but the game finished almost straight after.
It was a good all round performance from the team and the score line didn't really do them justice in the end and it was a welcome first win of the season.
