A Second Defeat

10th June - Knox City 3-2 Doncaster Rovers

Goals: Jarryd Pickard, Karl Pimlott

With Adam Bove unwell, Elliot Kyriacou filled in in goal for Rovers after a successful game against Knox for the Under 15 B League side. Rovers also welcomed back Jarryd Pickard at right back after missing the last game with a rolled ankle and he lined up in defence alongside Dominic Curulli and Marc Graziani with Ben Vernes moving back from midfield.

Rovers started the game brightly and forced a corner in the first minute but Knox cleared well. After ten minutes of end to end football, Rovers won another corner after a break down the right by Ashley Stevenson. The ball was swung into the box by Gareth Tanner and, after a scramble, Knox cleared the ball out of the penalty area. However, it was picked up by Jarryd Pickard who picked his spot and curled a beautiful goal into the top-right corner of the net. A contender for Goal of the Season.

Knox hit back quickly and equalised as Elliot Kyriacou got his hands to a shot but was unable to keep it out. Rovers quickly pressed forward again with Michael Kil and Karl Pimlott busy in the centre of midfield Rovers pressed to regain the advantage. A second goal came ten minutes before half time with Karl Pimlott capping a good first half with a goal from ten yards. Rovers held on to go into the break with a 2-1 lead.

The second half started with Knox putting Rovers under pressure with last-ditch tackles from Dominic Curulli and Ali Sajadi keeping Knox at bay and Ben Vernes putting in a Man-Of-The-Match performance. With Rovers clinging on to their lead, Knox turned up the pressure and finally equalised for a second time halfway through the second period. Poor Rovers marking at a corner allowed Knox a free header at the far post.

Now the traffic was mostly one-way, with Rovers unable to find any rhythm, despite good work on the right from Joel Morandini. After a couple of near misses, Knox finally got the winner with five minutes left to grab the three points and move up to second in the table.
